Question 1: Find the SDS information for chloroform and identify the hazards associated with this chemical.

Hazard Associated With Chloroform


Acts as a relatively potent anesthetic. Irritates respiratory tract and causes central nervous system effects, including headache, drowsiness, dizziness. Exposure to higher concentrations may result in unconsciousness and even death. May cause liver injury and blood disorders. Prolonged exposure may lead to death due to irregular heart beat and kidney and liver disorders.


Causes severe burning in mouth and throat, pain in the chest and vomiting. Large quantities may cause symptoms similar to inhalation.

Skin Contact:

Causes skin irritation resulting in redness and pain. Removes natural oils. May be absorbed through skin.

Eye Contact:

Vapors causes pain and irritation to eyes. Splashes may cause severe irritation and possible eye damage.

Chronic Exposure:

Prolonged or repeated exposure to vapors may cause damage to the nervous system, the heart and the liver and kidneys. Contact with liquid has defatting effect and may cause chronic irritation of skin with cracking and drying, and corresponding dermatitis. Chloroform is a suspected human carcinogen.

Aggravation of Pre-existing Conditions:

Persons with pre-existing skin disorders or eye problems, or impaired liver, kidney or respiratory function may be more susceptible to the effects of the substance.

Question 2: In mitochondria, where is the gene located that encodes Cytochrome C and what keeps this protein trapped within the mitochondria?

The gene that encodes for Cytochrome C is actually found within the nucleus of the cell and to be more precise is actually coded for by the CYCS gene in the genomic DNA and this protein is trapped within the mitochondria because the protein cannot pass through the lipid membrane as Cytochrome C is the only water soluble molecule that is found within the intermembrane space.

1. What are the changes in phenotypes that you observe between group A and group B in your graph?

For Phenotype A, there are no cells present for the TM4 phenotype.

For Phenotype B, there is almost no change in this phenotype.

In phenotype C, there is a significant drop in the TM4 group approximately 20% compared to the control.

There is a significant increase in the TM4 group compared to the control in phenotype D.

Again in there is almost no change in this phenotype E like phenotype B

For Phenotype F there is approximately half the number of TM4 cells compared to the control.

2. What are the changes in phenotypes that you observe between group A and group B in the pictures?

In group A we see a large amount of cell type falling into cell type C, D and E which is stumped prolonged and string cell types. It can also be seen that the colour of the cells in Group A are a brownish red while in group B the cell types that are common are mainly D and E which are prolonged and stringed with the colour of the cell a fluro yellowish green.

GROUP 1: Synaptic Junction

This page caught my attention as soon as I saw it and that made me want to read on and thus learn about Synaptic Junction. A lot of research has gone into this assignment and it’s evident in the information presented as its precise which also helps capture the readers. The amount of research is also evident in the long list of references. The webpage is actually extremely informative covering pretty much every aspect of synaptic junction. Your webpage has the most pictures and this helps it stand out as one of the best project pages. I really, really like the formatting and the tables. The images break up the information so you’re never overloaded with the amount of text. The language in is the right mixture of scientific language meaning that even people without a scientific background can understand the junction. I also really like the first picture you have, give a page a really good feel to it.

GROUP 2: Gap Junctions

The layout and format of the web page could be better and I am saying this because when you add the picture straight under the text it takes up a large amount of space and the web page looks longer than it really is. However the subheading and the information had a really good flow. The tables in the section, especially the table describing the different types of junction allow you to highlight certain points. The images that you have on your webpage are really well explained yet as a criticism you could have more pictures. The page has an extremely scientific feel so you don’t have to change anything there. There are some spelling mistakes but that shouldn’t be a big problem as you will probably find these in your final check. I really found informative but is sort of thought that maybe if somebody without a background in science would struggle certain parts. Putting it under different sub headings also made this extremely easy to follow as well but all in all I really liked the page. Nice Work!!!

GROUP 3: Tight Junctions

Your project is put together very well in terms of its structure and layout, making it easy to keep up with the expanse of information you have provided. The detail and depth you've gone into is very impressive especially in the introduction and history sections. The use of tables is especially effective in the disease sections because I feel it presents the content in a clear and concise way making it easier for the reader to understand and make comparisons. The glossary also must be completed. Also in the function section I feel the image to text ratio isn’t right. There were some small spelling and grammatical mistake but that should be fine when you go over it before final submission Otherwise, the page is very well thought out and I definitely felt like I gathered a thorough overview from it.

GROUP 5: Adherens Junctions

Congratulation all the team members of group 5, the page look amazing. Very well researched. One of the pages with the most informative content. However I suggest few changes can make the page look even better

  • Lack of information in the section of history.
  • I also think that a bit of reformatting and by this I mean moving the pictures around might make the site as it has less text on it.

Overall well researched page. Well done guys.

GROUP 6: Neuromuscular Junction

This page was one of the pages that caught my attention as soon as I saw it and thus made me want to keep reading. The use of tables and dot points allows the information or the main points of the information to be portrayed through which is a good thing. The use of pictures as well also breaks the text up into smaller bits so it doesn’t seem as if you are reading as much. There were some small spelling and grammatical errors but that’s something a simple spell check will fix. I also enjoyed the small movie. All in all I didn’t think there is much you need to change.
