Diagram of the PAM. The DMD is placed in the primary image plane where it directs light to and from the object plane of the microscope when illuminated using source and filter block A. Under these conditions, an optical sectioning condition may be established using the conjugate relationship between the DMD and the object plane of the microscope. Two options for conventional imaging exist: all the DMD pixels may be turned ‘on’ and the DMD illuminated using source and filter block A, or the standard epiillumination system of the microscope can be used (source and filter block B). The triplet relay system is arranged such that focal plane and CCD camera are normal to the DMD. The focal plane is, however, tilted with respect to the local optical axis.
