Diagrammatic Representation of Beta Cell Intracellaular Signalling
In pancreatic beta cells, an increase in blood glucose levels blocks ATP-dependent potassium channels (seen in yellow in image on the right) thus leading to the depolarisation of the membrane. ATP-sensitive potassium channels are potassium channels that are inhibited by high intracellular concentrations of ATP. This depolarisation triggers voltage dependant calcium channels (seen in blue in image on the right) in the membrane to open, causing a calcium influx within the cell. This influx acts on exocytotic machinery, stimulating merging of vesicles containing insulin; preparing them for secretion.
