Prokaryotic genomes and membranes
(a) Transmission electron micrograph of prokaryotic cyanobacteria depicting significant bioenergetic membrane surface area expansion as internal thylakoid membranes. Cyanobacteria however are small enough to ensure that a few copies of the genome are enough to maintain control over chemiosmotic couples. (b) Transmission election micrograph of intracellular bacteria residing within free-living cyanobacteria. This is an extremely rare example of a prokaryote inside a walled prokaryote. This phenomenon has occurred without the use of phagocytosis. (c) Numerous copies of nucleoids each containing the complete Thiomargarita genome stained with DAPI, with a giant vacuole above. (d) Extreme polyploidy in Epulopiscium, highlighting peri-membrane location of nucleoids.
