Procedure of Islet Transplantation Depicted Diagrammatically

Transplants often are performed through the use of ultrasound to guide a catheter; a small plastic tube through the upper abdomen and into the portal vein of the liver. Islets are then infused through the catheter into the liver, requiring only a local anesthetic. In some cases, surgeons will make a small incision using general anesthesia.
