Open, Closed and Virtual Nuclear Envelope Breakdown

This image schematically depicts the different types of mitosis. A. Highlights the complete breakdown of the nuclear envelope and NPCs at the beginning of open mitosis which occurs in higher eukaryotes. B. Depicts the event of closed mitosis which occurs in lower eukaryotes such as yeast and other fungi. It clearly shows how the nuclear envelope and NPCs remain intact, while also highlighting that RanGAP1(essential for the translocation of RNA and proteins through the NPC)continues to exist in the cytoplasm and the Ran-GTP gradient across the nuclear envelope remains intact. C. Shows the novel Virtual nuclear envelope breakdown that occurs in Schizosaccharomyces pombe where the nuclear envelope and NPCs remain intact however RanGAP1 enters the nucleus allowing for an apparent 'open' mitosis with a closed structured nucleus
Original legend- Figure 1. Virtual nuclear envelope breakdown (V-NEBD). (A) In higher eukaryotes, both the nuclear membrane and the NPCs disassemble at the beginning of mitosis. (B) Many lower eukaryotes, like fungi, undergo closed mitosis. During closed mitosis both the nuclear membrane and the NPCs remain intact, RanGAP1 remains localized in the cytoplasm, and the Ran-GTP gradient across the NE remains intact. (C) During meiosis II in the fission yeast S. pombe, both the nuclear membrane and the NPCs remain intact but RanGAP1 enters into the nucleus, resulting in V-NEBD.
Physical breakdown of the nuclear envelope is not necessary for breaking its barrier function
