Diagrammatic Representation of Electron Transport Chain
This diagram highlights the four enzyme complex system involved in the electron transport chain (ETC). These enzyme complexes transfer donated electrons to the ultimate electron receptor; oxygen. Throughout the transfer of electrons, the ETC concurrently pumps protons (H+) into the inter-membrane space, generating a gradient across the mitochondrial membrane. the ATPase enzyme harnesses this gradient to drive ATP synthesis.
