Normal Function & Abnormal Function

  • The Introduction is quite succinct and this is a good note, however it feels that this section doesn’t encapsulate the entire spectrum of the project. Thus this section should look to introduce the topics of discussion, rather than simply provide a brief summary of the pathway. Including an interactive image would certainly enhance the appeal.
  • The History section should probably be located directly below the introduction. There has yet been no attempt made on this section.
  • The pathway section provides a very good summary of the overall process, however I do feel that this section should be somewhat more detailed, as this section is the main part of the project. No references have been made. The image used is a great conceptualisation of the process, however this also hasn’t been referenced, and no reference of the copyright has been made.
  • The normal function section contains a great deal of information, and this would have taken up a lot of time to find, however, once again the author has failed to make citations as to the origin of the information.
  • The section for Abnormal function seems to be cited appropriately. On the downside this information is quite difficult to follow mainly due to the poor structure of the text. The incorporation of table will most likely solve this problem
  • The section for proteins contain far too much information, especially considering the scope of the research. It would probably be enough to list the proteins involved and include a small description. Also this section should be located directly before the pathway section.
  • No attempt has yet been made on the New or current research
  • The Glossary of terms is a good addition, however should contain more terms
  • The references seem to be done correctly

  • Intro – great intro, straight to the point and easy to follow. Perhaps talk about what you will be talking about in the paper though
  • Pathway – maybe introduce it a little better of what a leukocyte extravasation does and when and how it does it. Or readers may find it confusing to just read it that way. Great picture to go with the supporting text however make sure you reference it (even if it’s a student drawn image, mention it).
  • History – no text??
  • Normal function: don’t think its necessary to have that first line written there, just get straight into the intro of it. I think include the pathway part into the normal function instead of separating them into two headings. The intro of the normal function already sounds like what I’d like to read before I read about the pathways section. It’d make it transition better and sound nicer. Also the intro here sounds very clunky and doesn’t flow from sentence to sentence. Please also proof read.
  • Overall: you have no references before abnormal function! For your glossary, remember to put in any words that someone from a non-science background may not understand.

I think this page was somewhat incomplete and need more work

  • Introduction: like the flow of it but is too precise and need more detail
  • Pathway: Very clear and easy to read... may be make the image bigger so people dont have to click on the image to compare it with explanation
  • History: Nothing here! write something or get rid of it!
  • Normal Function: Nice details but there is no referencing and may be more images
  • Abnormal Function: no referencing and need more images
  • Proteins: I don't think this much information is needed on the protein.
  • New or Current Research: There is nothing here!

--- •Introduction: Introduction gives a extremely brief overview of the topic and no references were cited. This can be improved by going into a little bit more detail about the leukocyte extravasation.

•Pathway Section: This section was very clear but far too short with no references.

•History: This section has nothing yet.

•Normal Function: Shows understanding about the topic and was worded for audiences that are not familiar with the topic (which is a good point. that means you were able to relay the message in your own simple words). This section can be improved further by having references and checking the capitalization of some words. Also i think it will be better if the three numbered points under "brief explanation of the three steps of phagocytosis" under Leukocyte Activation were put in dot points. (just a suggestion)

•Abnormal Function: This section showed thorough research and is well referenced. As a suggestion, this section would look more engaging if there were photos.

•Proteins: Well researched section with proper references and appropriate images.

•New of Current Research: This section needs to be worked on. There is nothing under this section.

  • Introduction: nicely summarised.
  • Pathway: Clearly set out and easy to understand. However I noticed neither of these sections had any references.
  • History: needs to be started at least
  • Normal Function: check your spelling and grammar. Some of the sentences are a bit hard to follow. This section is very dense and needs images or bullet points to break it up. There are also no references.
  • Abnormal function: very well researched. However you might consider using a table to format this section because it needs to be organised in such a way that is easier to read.
  • Proteins: Good use of resources, however there is a lot of text to comprehend.
  • New or Current Research: nothing.
  • References: appears to be correct!

The project page demonstrates an overall understanding of the signalling pathway and fills most of the assessment criteria. Reading through the page, I found it was heavily text based and could of used more images to breakup the text instead of placing them in the right hand side. Perhaps, you can integrate tables in your project page to avoid the aforementioned issue. There are no student drawn images in the project and New or Current Research section is incomplete.

What was done well:

  • Pathway was very clear. The ordered structure of the text explained exactly how extravasation occurred in a simple and brief way
  • Introduction was short and precise. It gave a great overview while it wasn't too long or boring

What needs to be improved:

  • Absent history and new research sections
  • The protein section was very dense. Can you please link some of these proteins to the normal pathway? What step of the extravasation process do they play a major role - can you please make this more clear? May be put in a table with headings; 'protein name', 'protein structure, ' function', 'step of extravasation involved'
  • Abnormal and Normal pathway - where are the references?
  • more pictures and diagrams, espcially in the Abnormal/Normal function sections, would make the opage more appealing and easier to understand.

  • Intro: Well written and easy to understand. A picture would make this section more eye-catching. Needs references!
  • Pathway: The use of numbering and bolded text makes the information very appealing and easy to read. The diagram is also clear and easy to understand. Try to connect the text and diagram by matching the numbers with the information (ie. 'point 1' in the text correlates to 'point 1' in the diagram). A video would also be great for this section, I remember seeing one in a biology lecture once and it was very interesting! This section needs references.
  • Normal Function: Excellent introductory paragraph, shows a good understanding of the topic area. You need to edit the spacing within the paragraphs, for example you have numbers listed within the paragraph which could be better read as a list going down the page. Needs references.
  • Abnormal Function: All the information is relevant, however could be better represented in a table format.
  • Proteins: The paragraphs are too long. They need to be broken up by subheadings, tables and lists to highlight key information. The first image is excellent, the only thing missing is a caption.
  • Overall impression: The choice of content shows a good understanding of the topic area. For the most part the information is very well written and easy to understand, however the use of lists, tables and diagrams could make the page easier for the reader to navigate around key information. More images would make the page more eye-catching and appealing to read.

You are one of the few groups to have a student drawn image for pathway, and the image is very relevant to the content on the pathway. The sections "abnormal function" and "proteins" are structured and presented well, although some pictures of the effects of LAD would be helpful for "abnormal function", and the integrin picture in "proteins" needs a caption and proper citation.

Besides the fact that there is nothing under "history", I think that section should go before "pathway". As for "introduction", "pathway" and "normal function", where are the citations??? And for the person doing "normal function", are you sure catalysation is a real word? If it is, shouldn't it be in the glossary?

    • Text needs to be reorganised into a more readable format instead of just large chunks of writing (Tables?)(Dot Points?), for example, “Leucocyte Activation” sections under “Normal Function” outlines the steps involved in phagocytosis. These would be much more easily readable as dot points, and possibly even supplemented with a few diagrams, flow charts or images.

  • Intro is short and sweet, good. Pathway section is very nice, only suggestion is enlarge the image so people can see it without having to click
  • A couple of sections are untouched this is a bit disappointing because overall information on the page seems of a high standard.
  • The protein section is really good information, it would be nice to see some more images, possibly of the actually proteins interacting with molecules discussed.

Introduction is brief but clear. It gives me a good general idea of what your project is all about.

The pathway section is excellent apart from the lack of referencing. The steps are very easy to follow and the student picture is an invaluable addition! Please do provide the student copyright statement for this image and make clear whether or not you used inspiration for another source - if yes, provide a reference and copyright statement for that source.

You have no information in the history section, so please add to this. I would also advise you to rearrange your sections. Here is a suggestion: intro, history, pathway, proteins (as they are involved in the pathway), normal function, abnormal function.

Normal function has quite a lot of good information. My big issue with this section is the lack of references! I don't think we have been taught all of this knowledge yet at school/uni, so you must have used other sources. Please provide them to avoid being accused of plagiarism. Another point is that pictures would make this section look more attractive, hence encouraging me to continue reading. A simplified image of leukocyte recruitment, activation and microbe killing would really help.

Abnormal function is well done with the introduction to the different LADs, and then further detail under the different subheadings. A brief and colourful table summarising LAD 1, 2 and 3 could be useful in this section. Another option is to provide the reader with pictures to engage them. Thankfully, references are provided in this section.

I mentioned before that you could put the protein section in a different location. The section itself has a lot of information and I can see the effort that has been put into this. Most of the focus seems to be related to the cell adhesion receptors themselves, not the interaction with the leukocytes. Your integrin section does not even mention leukocytes and leukocyte extravasation! Maybe focus on that a bit more. Please change the first image next to integrins to 'thumb' and provide a description below it. Copyright statement is present, as is the source. However, the second image only has a copyright statement - no source/reference is provided when looking at the image file (when I click on the image).

You've made a good initial list with terms in your glossary, however you could expand upon this. Especially some of the abbreviations used. The references seem to be fine.

Both the introduction and pathway is clearly eplained, and have been written in a logical manner. However, what I did notice is the lack of referencing in the pathway section. Surely you must have got this information from somewhere.

What happened to the history?? Please complete this section as it would benefit your page.

The subheadings used for normal function, abnormal function and proteins is really well done. The glossary needs to be extended as there are a number of abbreviations could not be undersood.

I did notice that a number of things were missing in your page. External links, I couldnt find any. A number of links could be great to include. A link to a movie which would explain the signalling pathway would also be great.

Current and Future research is left blank. Please include information about what research is taking place and which research groups/institute are responsible for it.

overall the content is correctly cited and referenced, and the layout of the page is really good. The first image, and a few others dont have the copyright information. It would be a good idea to include it. A few tables and more diagrams would make the information easier to understand.

The ‘History’ is not started, either is ‘Current research’. Possibly add an image to the ‘Abnormal pathway’ section to break up the large paragraphs of text. Also, there needs to be a student drawn image on your project. The ‘Pathway’ section is very easy to understand, well summarised and supported by an appropriate diagram. There are no references in the first half of the project; however the referencing in the remainder of the project is complete.

  • Introduction: Great job on providing an overview of leukocyte extravasation. My area of improvement for this is to provide a couple of sentences that summarise the general structure of your page and what you aim to cover.
  • Pathway: A fantastic image! If the image on the right is student drawn, make sure you indicate this on the image page. The effectiveness of the image would be increased by making it larger and having the steps in the text correspond to the numbers in the diagram. Don’t forget to add references!
  • Normal function: This is an excellent section which demonstrates a clear understanding of the normal function of leukocyte extravasation. Aesthetically, this section would greatly benefit from the addition of a diagram showing the mechanism of leukocyte activation or microbial death, and the use of bullet points or numbered list to break up the long paragraphs. The first paragraph needs editing to fix up some grammatical errors.
  • Abnormal function: I can see a lot of effort and research has gone into establishing this section and it’s incredible however not very visually appealing. In my opinion, the best way to present this information is in the form of a table with accompanying images.
  • Proteins: The use of images and diagrams in this section is commendable however the large chunks of text next to it is not very appealing to the reader. Perhaps you could resolve this by using table formats or dot points. The referencing is also pretty scarce in this section so make sure that’s followed up.

Excellent work Group 8! As a group, you’ve clearly demonstrated a good command of scientific concepts and research skills. The most important area to improve is the structure and appearance of the page as well as the referencing! Also, make sure the history and current research sections are completed.

  • The pathway section is very nicely summarised although references are missing. I also like the use of the picture to supplement the text however I’m not sure if this is the student drawn image or if it just lacks referencing.
  • Normal function section is very informative however it needs to be proof read because there are some small grammatical errors, e.g be instead of by. Also the references need to be formatted in the correct wiki format. I do however like the use of subheadings in this section.
  • The abnormal function section is very informative however the layout should be uniform throughout. LAD 2 and 3 are followed by symptom and treatment subheadings but LAD 1 is only supplemented by a symptoms subheading even though the treatment information is there.
  • Protein section is good. It might be better to name what the four families are in the introductory sentence and then progress with the subheadings but it is not vital.
  • New or current research is not done yet. However you can use this section as an opportunity to introduce some external links into your project.
  • The referencing of the pictures is excellent. However there seems to be a problem with reference number 5.

In your History I would suggest to make a colon after function. In the introduction there are different sentences that I cannot understand from their logic. The third sentence has two verbs after each other, and is written in an unscientific way- people who read your page about leukocyte extravasations are probably not interested in the fact how wounds come into being; either on the playground or in a traffic accident. Moreover you should work on the space gaps between words and punctuations throughout the whole page. There are plenty of word repetitions (“recruit”, “recruitment”, “activated”, “sense” etc.) which cause irritation. Summarizing the first part, I ask myself if this work is written on a phone or in a five minute break. It contains many spelling, punctuation, and tenor mistakes. The text for Selectins could be better understood, when you superscripted the picture. Then there would be a connection between both, text and image which in turn would be easier for the reader to follow. All in all, your group should work on references (especially there is a gap for reference 5), and reread the whole page for repetitions and tenor mistakes.

First thing i noticed is the heading but you should put down that its the signalling pathway that ull be discussing on the page.

The normal and abnormal function are very well done. With the proteins section you have done bring it into context so we know why ur talking about them....maybe try to include them in the siganlling section.

The balance between text and pictures is very skewed so try add more pictures and I also noticed that u havnt put up a self drawn image yet.

The parts written so far just need minor adjustments with the punctuations but overall well written.

The history and current research part is what you should start writing soon.

The introduction is quite short, and thus you may want to consider making it longer. I like that pathway has been simplified so that it is easier to understand, however, I cannot tell whether the image associated with this section is a student drawn image or not, thus I cannot comment on referencing and copyright information. This being said, more details about this can be provided in the details section of the picture. I am assuming you are aware that you have not completed the history section, and so I cannot comment on that either. The section on normal functioning lacks images to make it more visually pleasing. In addition, in certain cases it is explained in ways that may be too basic, and in other instances, more complicated ideas are being expressed without any referencing. The section on abnormal functioning is well-referenced and detailed. But once again, there lacks images to make the project more visually pleasing. Also, I recommend deleting the extra spaces in this section (especially before and after "other"). The section on proteins is also detailed and clear, but in certain paragraphs, I believe there are references missing. However, I like the images, which have been properly referenced and include copyright information. The glossary of terms is fine, but I assume it will be longer once the project is complete, and includes the missing sections (namely history and current/future research).

Group 8 feedback:

The introduction seems to start off well, however it is still short and there is a lack of hand drawn images. There doesn't seem to be any history present and Current research has not been started.

The pathway section was very easy to understand and flow quiet well. There are also diagrams that support the content given. The referencing section needs more work, specifically in the first half of the project.

Despite this the flow and content of the assessment seems to be well done. With more focus and improvement on these sections and use of tables and imaging, the assessment will be completed. Interesting L.E. diagram

This article talks about the differences in the roles of intracellular factors and discusses how they work together to create normal function.

Leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction is necessary for photodynamic therapy induced vascular permeabilization[2]

The article talks about the neccesary interaction between normal leukocyte and normal endothelial interaction for greater vascular permeabilization.

The Role of the Tec Kinase Bruton's Tyrosine Kinase (Btk) in Leukocyte Recruitment[3]

This article talks about how normal function of leukocyte extravasation is important for times of overcoming inflammed tissue.

One of the major signalling factors for guiding Leukocyte extravasion is Von Willebrand Factor, released whenever endothlial cells are injured which strongly attracts Luekocytes to the region of injury [4]

Leukocyte extravasion can be a pathogenic process when signaling goes wrong, such as in cases of multiple sclerosis where there is a recruitment of leukocytes into the CNS where they should not be normally present [5] The presence of excess leukocytes in the CNS blood supply is thought to linked to Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, or Sepsis[6]

Furthermore, some pathogenic organisms can manipulate or counter the usual signaling processes involved in Leukocyte extravasion an example of which includes Bacilus anthracis more commonly known as Anthrax by which the organism reduces the recruitment of leukocytes to an infection[7]

One of the signalling factors, or chemotactic agents for guiding Leukocyte extravasion is Von Willebrand Factor, released when endothlial cells are injured. [8]

Alternately, article 1 talks about the role of deranged leukocyte extravasion in an autoimmune disease of great interest, Multiple sclerosis. article 2 is about what happens when chemotatic agents fail to indicate a particular location (they occur at elevated levels systemically) causing sepsis. Article 3 is about some pathogenic organisms (Anthrax) may release their own signalling molecules to counter the immune system, and leukocyte recruitment in particular, and Article 4 introduces one of the primary signals for acute inflammation processes, including leukocyte extravasion.

Hey guys, so I'm not entirely sure what we should be doing with the topic "Cell signalling" whether we should be looking at a process for a particular cell, a particular hormone [such as suggested testosterone] and all its effects. Not sure if this is broad enough, but perhaps we can choose a particular cell, and take a look at all the 'signals' that effect it? Such as looking at the Parietal Cell and note all the factors that stimulate/inhibit its action [production of gastric acid] how it works etc etc
