Lipid Droplet

From CellBiology

Introduction

Lipid droplets are organelles that form depots of neutral lipids in the cell cytoplasm. These lipid droplets are abundant in adipocytes (fat cells) but also occur in most other cells.

It is only recently that these droplets have been reevaluated as more than a storage site and considered an new cytoplasmic organelle.

  • Fats are triacylglycerols
  • glycerol portion linked through ester bonds to three fatty acids
