Medicine: Society and Health: Membranes

Introduction

Each cell is surrounded by a cell membrane (plasma membrane) which both separates it and allows cells to interact with their environment. Within the cell membranes also form compartments (organelles) which allow specialization of functions within eukaryotic cells.

The basic structure of all membranes is similar, 2 lipid layers with embedded proteins and cholesterol.

This plasma membrane is also the barrier which bacteria and viruses have devised many different methods to cross, in order to infect a cell.
