Lab Methods

Introduction

This page is an alphabetical list of methods, with a brief description, used in the Cell Biology Laboratory with links to more detailed methods pages.

There will be a separate page developed for a more general description of methods in Cell Biology for undergraduate use.

Note that there are many different internet databases of Cell Biology methods, the methods shown here are generally specific to our laboratory.

Actin

CBL methods Actin
There are many different applications for identifying cytoskeletal actin in cell biology, this page gives an introduction to some commonly used methods and is linked to more specific actin methods such as: filamentous actin probes, globular actin probes, actin antibodies and actin fusion proteins.

Antibodies

CBL methods Antibodies
There are many different applications for antibodies in cell biology, this page gives an introduction to antibodies and is linked to more specific antibody methods suc as: antibody production , immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, immunoprecipitation, ELISA, and flow cytometry.

Apoptosis

CBL methods Apotosis
Programmed cell death is how most cells die. Each cell type has a specific lifespan from days to years with some cells also being induced to die in disease or through medical therapeutics.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)

CBL methods ELISA

Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA) an important method for immunologically identifying and quantifying proteins.

Fixation

CBL methods Fixation

The process of Fixation allows preservation cells and tissues for later analysis. There are a number of different fixative agents that are used for preserving different cellular components and used in different analysis techniques.

Glutamate Cytotoxicity

CBL methods Glutamate Cytotoxicity
Neuronal cell death can be induced by glutamate excitotoxicity.

Microarray

CBL methods Microarray
This page introduces the microarray techniques used in the Lab. From this page you can access more specific information including microarray data sheets and external database links.

Microscopy

CBL methods Microscopy
This page introduces the microscopic techniques used in the Lab. From this page you can access more specific information including microscope data sheets and calibration tables.

Image Analysis

CBL methods Image Analysis
This page introduces the image analysis techniques used in the Lab. From this page you can access more specific information including method of image collection, video and analogue to digital conversion and image analysis programs.

Occupational Health and Safety

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
This page introduces important issues related to safety and research practices in the laboratory.

Statistics

Statistics
This page introduces important issues related to research data analysis in the laboratory.

Tissue Culture

CBL methods Tissue Culture
Tissue Culture is a widely used technique for the in vitro study of cells. In recent years, lab procedures and consumables have become very standardised.
