History

This page introduces the historic background to Cell Biology. It has been simplified extensively and many key events are probably missing from this selection. For a more detailed coverage look at the external Links below.

Brief Timeline

1655 - Robert Hooke (1635-1703) coined the word "cell" from microscopic observation of slices of cork bark. (More about Robert Hooke)

1838 - Matthias Schleiden (1804-1881) proposes the cell theory based upon plants followed by Schwann's study in animals. (More about Matthias Schleiden)

1839 - Theodor Schwann (1810-1882) All organisms consist of one or more cells and the cell is the basic unit of structure for all organisms. (More about Theodor Schwann)

1898 - Camillo Golgi (1843-1926) develops staining technique (silver nitrate) allows identifcation of the cellular organelle that now bears his name the "Golgi apparatus". (More about Camillo Golgi)

1941 - Coons uses antibodies coupled to fluorescent dyes to detect cellular antigens.
