A specialized cytoplasmic structure formed for the degradation of proteins within the cell. It forms a large "barrel-like" protein complex, within which active proteolytic sites degrade proteins that have been "tagged" for destruction.
The "tagging" of protein is by the addition of ubiquitin (ubiquitination) which is the signal recognised by the proteosome.
Example: In cell cycle, degradation of cyclins in mitosis.
